Brazil’s President Marshall Castelo Branco today received a delegation of leaders of the American Jewish Committee headed by Morris B. Abram, president of the Committee.
In his greeting to the members of the delegation, who this week began a visit to Jewish communities in four Latin American countries. President Branco hailed their mission of goodwill and said that he was convinced “that world peace depends on the improvement of human sentiments and also very much on the improvement of political institutions in every country.” President Branco pledged to “do everything to improve the political institutions and the education of the people and to do my share for world peace.”
In his message to the President, Mr. Abram said that “as a Jew, I learned by bitter experience that the best type of society is a democracy where the rights of all men are respected independently of race and faith. We come to South America in a mission of goodwill to meet our fellow Jews and to create the means to help them in their cultural and educational programs.”
The reception by President Branco was the culmination of a two-day visit to the Brazilian capital during which the delegation was also received by the President of the Supreme Court and the presidents of the Brazilian Senate and House of Representatives. The Brazilian press and radio stations gave wide coverage to the delegation’s visit and hailed the work of the AJC. The delegation proceeded today to Rio de Janeiro for a five-day visit in that city.
