President Eduardo Frei inaugurated tonight a two room school for 80 pupils constructed by 50 members of the Maccabi club in a workers suburb in San Miguel. The school is one of three being built by the Jewish sports club members as a contribution by the Jewish community to the educational program of President Frei’s new Government.
The Maccabi members met a self-imposed deadline to finish the school in 15 days on land owned by the government. The school involved also a contribution by Santiago Jewry of about $2,000 for materials. Construction work on the three schools is being done entirely by members of the club.
The Jewish builders, who are between 18 and 30, were cheered by a visit from Juan Gomez Millas, Secretary of Instruction; Patricio Rojas, Undersecretary of Instruction; and Marco Antonio Rocca, Assistant to President Frei. Construction began on Dec. 15. The Maccabi members included university students, doctors, architects, and teachers. The Government officials congratulated the young workers and thanked them for their contribution to the Government program.
