The President’s Committee on Religious and Moral Welfare and Character Guidance in the armed forces held its first meeting today at the White House with President Truman, Secretary of Defense Forrestal, Secretary of the Navy Sullivan, and Assistant Secretary for Air Whitney attending.
Frank L. Weil, president of the National Jewish Welfare Board and chairman of the President’s Committee, said the President greeted the nine members of the Committee, using the ideas he expressed in his executive order of Oct. 27 setting up the committee. The President said at that time that it was “the policy of the government to encourage and promote the religious, moral, and recreational welfare and character guidance of persons in the armed forces and thereby to enhance the military preparedness and security of the nation.”
