Press Applauds Possible Selection of Cardozo for U.S. Supreme Court Bench

The possibility that Chief Justice Benjamin N. Cardozo of the New York State Court of Appeals may be appointed to the United States Supreme Court bench, following rejection of Judge John J. Parker, is mentioned in the “New York Evening Post” and the “New York Evening Telegram,” both of which papers highly approve such a choice.

The “Post” says that there is nothing to prevent President Hoover “from naming the most distinguished American jurist not on the Supreme Court bench, Chief Justice Benjamin N. Cardozo…and receiving the plaudits of almost all factions in the Senate.

“He…would be satisfactory to the regular Republicans who look upon him in a rather non-partisan light, although he is a Democrat.”

The “Telegram” says, after discussing the rejection of Parker:

“There can be only one right man. He must be the best man in the country for this high responsibility. He must be the most eminent jurist.

“Happily, that man is known and available. Benjamin Cardozo is the man. Wherever men discuss the Supreme Court vacancy his name is to be heard.

“Judge Cardozo does not belong to New York alone. He has served the nation. The United States is fortunate in having such a man to call upon at this time. We commend his name to President Hoover.”
