The Jewish Community Council of Milan has protested to the Catholic authorities in Milan against the practice in Italian secular hospitals of exerting pressure on Jewish patients, particularly those near death, to change their religion to Catholic.
The Vicar General of the Diocese has informed Milan Rabbi David Friedenthal that steps would be taken to avoid similar incidents in the future. Meanwhile, the community is planning to enlarge its hospital so that it can admit all Jewish patients. Members of the WIZO will serve on visiting delegations to Jewish patients in the city’s hospitals until the Jewish institution is enlarged.
