Previous membership in the Nazi Party will not bar a German from entering Australia as an immigrant, it was stated here today by Sir John Storey, chairman of the Commonwealth Immigration Planning Council, which has a decisive influence on the Australian Government’s immigration policy.
Speaking at a public meeting here, Sir John declared that “carefully selected” Germans would be a great asset to the country, adding that 50,000 could be absorbed if transportation were available to bring them from Europe. “If they were members of the Nazi Party I would not necessarily accept the fact that they were Nazis,” he asserted. “I believe that membership in the Nazi Party was compulsory and that hundreds of thousands were quiescent Nazis.”
