Cardinal Gerlier of Lyons, Primate of France, today protested the statement this weekend of Grand Rabbi Jacob Kaplan who questioned the good faith of the Catholic authority who more than three months ago concluded an agreement with the Grand Rabbinate for the return of the kidnapped Finaly children.
In his “formal protest,” Cardinal Gerlier declared that when “the moment comes we can reveal the serious efforts undertaken to return the children and the difficulties encountered, it will be readily understood that the maximum possible had been done to execute the clauses of the March 6th agreement.” The Cardinal added that the responsibility for the delay is “in no way incumbent” upon those “whom one would seem today to blame to the point of formulating injurious and unacceptable suspicions on their good faith.”
