Prime Minister Smuts Sends First Official Message to South African Chanukah Services

For the first time in the his## of the Jewish community in South Africa, an official government message was read ## religious service last night celebrating the beginning of Chanukah. The city’s ## and members of the council as well as military officers and Jewish veterans ##nded the service.

The message, from Prime Minister Jan Christian Smuts, was read by Minister of ##th M.S. Gluckman. It congratulated the Jewish people on the U.N.’s Palestine de## and singled out Dr. Chaim Weizmann for the warmest praise. Smuts, who was ##trumental in the issuance of the Balfour Declaration in 1917, reviewed the history ## the Jews in relation to the Mandatory during the past 30 years.
