Professor Dr. Ludwig Monday Hartmann, famous historian, died here yesterday at the age of sixty. Professor Hartmann was the first pupil of Mommsen, and devoted himself exclusively to the history of Rome. He published many books on this subject which have become standard works in the Universities of Central Europe.

Being a Jew he was unable to obtain his professorship at Vienna University until after the collapse of the Austrian Empire in 1918. Soon after the formation of the Austrian Republic, Professor Hartmann turned his attention to political affairs, and he was appointed the Austrian Republic’s first Ambassador to Berlin. He was counted one of the greatest educational authorities in Austria, and much of what has been achieved in the country in connection with the establishment of people’s universities was due his initiative and continued activity.

A few years ago Professor Hartmann, who was a Freethinker, formally left the Jewish community, joining no other religious community.
