Elek of the St. George’s Hospital Medical School have discovered a vaccine, at the moment still in the experimental stage, which gives protection to pregnant mothers against a virus infection that causes every year several hundred children to be born defective. Prof. Stern, 49, was born in Glasgow, the son of an Orthodox Jewish family.
