Progress was made toward the creation of a German fund that would compensate Holocaust survivors who worked as slave laborers during World War II, according to the Clinton administration’s point man on the issue. Undersecretary of State Stuart Eizenstat, who also said negotiations on the fund would be stepped up in the coming months, gave the optimistic appraisal after meeting Sunday with German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder’s chief of staff in Bonn.
