The Progressive Synagogue movement decided today to press for legislation to give the movement and its rabbis official status in Israel’s religious establishment, which is now under Orthodox control.
The movement, which claims 1,000 dues-paying members in seven congregations, as well as others who attend services without assuming membership, reportedly seeks official recognition of the type extended to the Neturei Karta, the ultra-Orthodox sect in Jerusalem. Specifically, the movement is asking equal treatment, relative to its size, in allocation of funds and other forms of aid given by the Religious Affairs Ministry and local religious councils to Orthodox groups.
