A project for the settlement of 3,500 orphaned Jewish child-refugees in the Jewish autonomous region of Biro-Bidjan, in which the Ambijan Committee will cooperate with regional authorities, was announced today by Vilhjalmur Stefansson, vice-president of the organization.
The project includes provision for the establishment of two new modern children’s settlements in Biro-Bidjan where the youngsters whose parents were killed by the Nazis will be permanently settled and where their re-adjustment and rehabilitation can be arranged for in an environment suited to their problems, since Yiddish is the official language of the schools and all public institutions. Two vocational schools will also be provided for the training of the refugee children for future employment and useful citizenship. Full details of the project will be made public on May 16, at a dinner at the Hotel Waldorf-Astoria given on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Jewish Autonomous Region.
