Characterizing the Wall Street Synagogue and its proposed penthouse sanctuary in the downtown Manhattan section as a valuable contribution to those who seek the benefits of a place for meditation and prayer in the midst of a concentrated business atmosphere, George Gordon Battle, accepted chairmanship of a Good-Will Committee of varied faiths to help sponsor the new institution to Judaism.
Benjamin E. Greenspan, founder and president of the Wall Street Synagogue, today announced the names of the members of the new board of sponsors headed by Mr. Battle: John J. Dietz, Commissioner of Department of Water Supply, Gas and Electricity; William McAdoo, Chief City Magistrate; George V. McLaughlin, president of the Brooklyn Trust Co.; Lawrence McGuire, merchant, Ferdinand Pecora, former chief assistant district attorney, John J. Rooney, special assistant corporation counsel, Charles H. Tuttle, United States Attorney, John R. Voorhis, president of the Board of Elections, and Thomas F. Dwyer, Commissioner of Public Markets.
The campaign that is to end in the actual construction of the world’s first penthouse synagogue on the roof of a skyscraper, will be under the honorary direction of A. E. Lefcourt, prominent realtor, who is treasurer of the congregation.
