A proposal to convoke a world conference of Jewish communities in Europe and the United States to defend the schechita, the Jewish method of slaughtering animals for food, against the move for its prohibition though international propaganda, was put forward here.
Ten delegates representing Warsaw at the world conference of the Societies for the Prevention of Cruclty to Animals, which is opening in Vienna on May 12, left for that city today. It was stated in the Polish press that they were committed to a platform to see through an anti-schechita resolution. It was further reported here that the Berlin Kehillah has addressed a request to the arrangements committee of the Vienna conference to admit the presentation of scientists’ opinions on the schechita method. The committee convening the Vienna conference rejected this request.
As a result of these developments, Dr. Sigismund Bychowski, well known Jewish leader here, and chairman of the health department of the Warsaw municipal government, addressed a letter to Deputy H. Farbstein, president of the Warsaw Kehillah, putting forward the proposal that in case the anti-schechita resolution is adopted at the Vienna world congress, a conference of Jewish communities in Europe and the United States be convoked, with participation of well-known scientists, to ward off the propaganda against the schechita. The purpose of the conveners of the Vienna conference is not so much to protect the animals as to harm the Jews, Dr. Bychowski pointed out.
