Poland was advised today to protect its Jews from incidents such as the Brzese pogrom of May 13 or forfeit “foreign respect and friendship.”
The Manchester Guardian, liberal daily, in an editorial on the excesses declared:
“If the Polish Government cares for foreign respect and friendship lot it protect these suffering people from their ago-long agony.”
Comparing anti-Semitism in Poland with the brand in Germany, the editorial said the Polish Jews suffered more terribly.
“While in Germany the anti-Semitism, cruel and ruthless, is carried out only on official lines, in Poland anti-Semitism is rife throughout all sections of the nation,” the paper declared, “and is tolerated by the Government, which ignores and neglects wanton outbursts of violence and destruction.”
