Demanding the freedom of Dr. Ernest Stoechker, international secretary of the organization, and other anti-Nazi prisoners incarcerated in German concentration camps and protesting the murder of Erich Baron, editor of Soviet Russia Today, the Friends of the Soviet Union were to hold a mass demonstration Saturday morning in front of the German Consulate, 17 Battery Place. Previous to the meeting the demonstrators paraded downtown through the lower East Side, starting at Seventh street and Avenue A. Later a committee was to visit the Consulate to make a formal presentation of its demands and protests.
On Friday a similar demonstration occurred before the Consulate. Protesting the imprisonment of Ernst Thaelmann, Communist leader, and other anti-Nazi sympathizers in Germany a contingent of fifty representatives of the American League Against Fascism marched past 17 Battery Place and then continued uptown by way of West street and Eleventh avenue and Eighteenth street. This parade also served the purpose of advertising a meeting to be held August 1 at Union Square by the Communist party.
