More than 2,000 persons, Jews and non-Jews filled Avondale Synagogue here and an overflow meeting was held in the Center Building adjoining. A resolution of protest, demanding an immediate change in the spirit and personnel of the British Administration in Palestine. Two thousand dollars was contributed toward the Palestine Emergency Fund.
Rabbi James G. Heller, chairman of the Executive Committee of the Zionist Organization of America, demanded a new British pronouncement under the Balfour Declaration “and the backing of such pronouncement by action. Dr. David Philipson, honorary president of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, urged generous contributions to the emergency fund.
Dr. Julian Morgenstern, president of the Hebrew Union College, a non-Zionist member of the Jewish Agency Council said: “Our grief is that of Rachel weeping for her sons who are no more. Once more Great Britain has blundered in Colonial administration and the blood of Israel has paid the price.”
Rabbi Louis Feinberg of Avondale Synagogue, Samuel Schmidt, Rabbi Isaac Blumenreich of Burnet Avenue Synagogue, addressed the gathering. I. O. Abrohams presided.
