The Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal has agreed to pay $500 per child for the secular educational program of five Jewish high schools. The Protestant School Board is responsible for secular public education in Montreal.
The five schools previously received $350 per child directly from the Quebec Government, but a recent Provincial bill provided private schools “associate status” with the Protestant or Catholic authorities. As “associates” the Jewish schools are now entitled to reimbursement of their secular program. The Protestant Board will pay two-thirds of the education costs, with the other one third, covering religious education, being maintained by Jewish school fees and campaigns. The new agreement is a sequel to one approved last month providing $350 per child by the Greater Protestant School Board to nine Jewish elementary schools, attended by 4,000 pupils, according to the Chronicle Review, Montreal-Toronto Jewish weekly.
