Vigorous protests by the eight-member Israel delegation resulted in a decision by the Medical Women’s International Association–in convention here–to postpone the question of admitting German physicians to membership. By a 43-31 vote, following a stormy session, the convention decided to leave the decision up to the World Medical Association, which will hold its annual convention in Washington next month.
Dr. Frenkel Szkop, of Tel Aviv, speaking on behalf of the Jewish state’s delegation, told the convention delegates that “medical science was violated and abused by the atrocious crimes committed by German doctors during World War II. The present generation of German doctors cannot escape the responsibility for those atrocities.” The American delegation urged the admission of the Germans, if they subscribe to the Geneva oath of 1948, under which a physician vows to refrain from conducting experiments on human beings without their consent.
