Max Sokol, a Jewish sculptor, has protested a decision to engage the sculptor Ivan Mestrovic to execute the memorial in New York to the 6,000,000 Jews slain by the Nazis. Declaring that he knows and admires Mestrovic’s work and is not opposed to him on artistic grounds, Sokol says: “When we are considering the erection of a memorial to the millions of Jews murdered by the Nazis, it seems to be important not to overlook the fact that during the Nazi regime, Mestrovic was looked on with favor by the Nazi leaders as one of the ‘genuine Aryan’ artist.”
