The Board of Education at its meeting today decided to take no action on the proposal of the Board of Regents to begin each school day with a prayer. Special consideration will be given to the proposal at a later meeting of the Board at which public hearings will be held.
The Citizens Union announced today that it is opposed to compulsory prayers in public schools. In a statement drawn up by its committee on legislation the group pointed out that even the non-denominational form of prayer authorized by the Board of Regents for voluntary adoption by school boards “has led to sharp debate in some communities.”
