With many Brazilian officials and Jewish leaders in attendance, a square in one of the finest residential districts of Rio de Janeiro was dedicated today as Chaim Weizmann Plaza, and a bust of the late first President of Israel was unveiled in the center of the square.
The project for the dedication of the square in memory of Dr. Weizmann was launched several months ago by Dr. Carlos Flexa Ribeiro, then Minister of Education of the State of Guanebara, now a candidate for the governorship of the state, Prof. Flexa Ribeiro is also president of the Brazil-Israel Cultural Center. Among the speakers at the ceremonies were Prof. Flexa Ribeiro; Guanebara Governor Carlos Lacerda; and Israel Ambassador Joseph Nahmias. Bordering the square is a municipal school named after Anne Frank.
