A store of arms which may have been amassed by underground opponents of the British regime during the Mandate, was found this weekend in cellars and basements in the Mea Shearim and Beit Israel quarters, stronghold of the Naturei Karta, fanatical Orthodox sect which refuses to recognize the authority of the State of Israel.

The arms cache is said to comprise four machine guns, five Stun guns, 40 rifles of British and Czech manufacture, more than 10,000 rounds of ammunition, hand grenades, detonators and armorers’ equipment. The arms were in good condition.

Police are investigating the possibility that the arms hoard may belong to a zealot underground organization.
