The Journal de Geneve speculates on what attitude France will take should the Axis formally back Italian press suggestions that all Jews be drivel from Europe and forced to settle in Madagascar.
The newspaper recalls that a Polish Government Commission sent to Madagascar in 1937 to investigate conditions there for possible Jewish settlement gave a favorable report. The opposition of Governor Leon Cayla of Madagascar caused the French Government at that time to adopt a reserved attitude toward the project, the newspaper points out.
“Since the question of Jewish colonizaton of Madagascar no longer interests Poland but France herself what will be the French Government’s attitude toward towards the delicate and thorny problems” the newspaper asks.
