Is Borden’s cream kosher and what other kosher cheese is on the market?

Answer

You can buy various kinds of kosher cheese in a number of delicatessen and grocery stores, as listed in our Food Guide. Other brands of kosher cheese listed in the Food Guide are sold through numerous retailers. If you cannot find a store in your neighborhood carrying these brands our Food Department is ready to assist. Always ask your grocer for kosher brands, and if he does not stock same, draw his attention to the Food Guide.

Question

Are soda crackers and other biscuits kosher?

Answer

To our knowledge there is only one cracker concern as listed in our Guide that manufactures a variety of kosher crackers. One should take care to observe that each individual cracker should be impressed with the word kosher and the outside wrapper of each box bear the seal of the Rabbinical Authority.

Question

Is Borden’s ice cream the only kosher one? How about Breyer’s and Hydrox? Does rabbinical supervision necessarily make ice cream kosher? With regard to sturgeon, is it trefa or not?

Ice creams that are under investigation will be listed in our next issue. Pending publication of this list our Department will furnish you with names of those listed as living up to the requirements of the Dietary Laws. Rabbinical supervision cannot make the ice cream kosher, as long as trefa ingredients are used in the making. In most of the creams gelatines are used, which makes the ice cream trefa. Constant supervision of food products will assure the observant Jew that no gelatine or any other trefa ingredients are added or used.

Is Ward’s or Pechter’s bread kosher?

The Food Department is checking up the various concerns and in due course will add to those already listed in the Guide.
