President Kennedy’s nomination of Secretary of Labor Arthur Goldberg to succeed retiring Supreme Court Justice Frankfurter today appeared certain to win quick Senate approval.
Although the Goldberg nomination would reinforce the “liberal” wing of the Court, praise for Mr. Kennedy’s choice came from both Democrats and Republicans. Senate Republican Leader Everett Dirksen called Mr. Goldberg a man who “measures up to every standard required for a place on the Supreme Court. ” Many Democratic Senators lauded Mr. Goldberg’s character, intelligence, and courage.
Meanwhile, Mr. Justice Frankfurter’s retirement has brought almost universal tribute to his stature and genius. It is being widely predicted here that Mr. Goldberg will follow the path of Mr. Frankfurter in the Court toward conservatism and not necessarily emerge as a “radical,”
The Washington Star said editorially today that “Mr. Goldberg, as a member of the Court, will turn out to be a conservative in the true and meaningful sense of the word. For the benefit of those who may doubt this, we recall the dismay with which so many received the word of Justice Frankfurter’s appointment back in 1939.”
