Rabbi Herbert A. Friedman, executive vice-chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, departed yesterday via plane to begin an intensive five-week survey of UJA–financed welfare, settlement and rehabilitation programs in Israel, Western Europe and other areas.
The recently installed UJA executive head will visit Israel, France, Germany, Austria, Italy and other areas where UJA funds are expended through its chief constituent agencies, United Israel Appeal and the Joint Distribution Committee. A highlight of Rabbi Friedman’s visit to Israel will be his inspection of the Jewish Agency’s famed ship-to-settlement program whereby newly arrived immigrants from Moslem and other areas are resettled, within hours, in new homes and new settlements.
The UJA executive head will also inspect the just-opened Yarkon Negev irrigation pipeline which was built in large measure with UJA funds. He will visit some of the 100 hospitals, clinics, sanatoria, old age and vocational rehabilitation centers that comprise the welfare program known as “Malben” through which the Joint Distribution Committee aids 25,000 recently arrived immigrants in need of special health and welfare services.
