Rabbi Chaim Hirschensohn of Jersey City, of the founders of the Zionist movement, died in the Beth Israel hospital yesterday at the age of 79 after a two weeks’ illness.
He was rabbi of the Moses Montefiore Synagogue in Hoboken and the Mount Zion Synagogue, Jersey City.
He came to the United States from Jerusalem in 1900. With his wife, who died four years ago, he had adopted Hebrew as a language of their home and he was one of the creators of the modern spoken Hebrew.
Rabbi Hirschensohn is survived by four daughters and a son.
