Rabbi Leo Jung of New York, called to Cleveland by the local rabbis as an expert in the kashruth controversy at the proceedings in the trial of Benjamin Cohen and Swift & Company versus the rabbi’s union and the kosher board, gave an interpretation of Jewish dietary laws which may have an important bearing on the outcome of the trial.
A good deal of excitement was created at yesterday’s session when one of the witnesses who is one of the two slaughterers of Swift & Co. whose banning caused the present trial, attempted to tell the court that he is more of an authority than the rabbis and denied that the slaughterers and butchers must accept the supervision of the rabbis. He also accused the rabbis’ union of being in a conspiracy with the kosher board for the purpose of extracting money of Benjamin Cohen, the agent for Swift & Co.
