After adopting a number of important resolutions and electing new officers, the thirty-first annual convention of the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States and Canada, closed here last night.
Rabbi Joseph Konvitz of Newark was elected president of the Union to succeed Rabbi Eliezer Silver of Cincinnati. Over four hundred rabbis of the United States and Canada attended the convention.
The convention adopted a resolution to support the Yeshivas in the United States, after the representatives of a number of Yeshivas appeared at the convention and pleaded for help.
An appeal for help for the Jews of the Soviet Union brought a quick response from the rabbis. Six hundred dollars were collected within a short time.
The convention also went on record as favoring cooperation with the Hebrew Typographical Union and asked all its members to support only union publishing and printing firms.
The convention closed with a banquet in honor of Rabbi Solkowitz of Bridgeport, Conn., who is leaving for Palestine in a short time.
