An official of the American Jewish Committee praised President Nixon’s welfare reform plan today as “the first major attempt to equalize help to the needy in various parts of the country since the system was set up almost 35 years ago.”
Rabbi Marc H. Tanenbaum, director of the A.J. Committee’s interreligious affairs department spoke on WINS radio. He said that “few will disagree with the suggestion for incentives and job-training programs that may transform thousands of welfare clients from relief recipients to taxpayers.” President Nixon’s program would broaden the welfare roles and place welfare on a Federal level but eligibility would require persons capable of working to accept appropriate jobs or enroll in special training courses.

The JTA Daily News Bulletin on August 7th incorrectly reported Charles J. Bensley’s announcement of the appointment of Dr. Aryeh Nesher. Dr. Nesher was named executive director of the Israel Education Fund, of which Mr. Bensley is president, not of the “Israel Foundation Fund” as reported.
