Rabbi Lou Silberman, a professor of Jewish studies at Vanderbilt University, died Tuesday at 91. Silberman, who taught at the Tennessee-based school from 1952 to 1980, was one of the professors who offered his resignation in 1960 after a student was expelled from Vanderbilt’s Divinity School for organizing civil rights sit-ins. A compromise was reached that stopped his resignation.
