A farewell reception in honor of Rabbi Meyer S. Shapiro of Piotrkow, Poland, was given Sunday night at Cooper Union. About 2,000 persons, among them 50 rabbis, attended the gathering. Rabbi E. Yolles of Philadelphia presided. Rabbi Shapiro is sailing to-night on the Berengaria following a year’s stay in the United States.
On the return of Rabbi Shapiro, who is bead of the Lubliner Yeshiva, construction will be begun on the largest Yeshiva to be erected in Eastern Europe. The site for the new Yeshiva has already been acquired. In connection with the Yeshiva which will accommodate 1,000 pupils, a large dormitory with 500 rooms is to be erected. The cost of the Yeshiva. which will be known as the Yeshivath Chachmei Lublin will be $250.000.
In his address at the farewell reception Rabbi Shapiro gave his impressions on American Jewish life and dwelt on the purpose of the Yeshiva which he spoke of as the greatest Torah center in Europe.
Only a small percentage of the persons who look part in the protest demonstrations for Sacco and Vanzetti were aliens according to a survey by the Department of Labor made public in Washington. The leaders and the rank and file of the various groups were American citizens.
Only one case of an alien offender has been called to the attention of the Rureat of Immigration and that was done informally. This person wrote threatening ## to Governor Fuller.
“Aliens of this country.” said Assistant Secretary Hushands. in charge of immigration “?ove America too well to for## any shadow of a right to stay here Our agents report that most of the Sacco-Vanzetti demonstrations were conducted by people who belong here.”
