“Either Hitler or his anti-Semitic policies must go,” Rabbi Louis I. Newman told the 47th annual convention of the Independent Order Brith Abraham here today in an eloquent speech punctuated by storms of applause.
“It may not be possible to change the leopard’s spots—that’s for Germany to decide,” he declared. “But the world will not tolerate the persecution of a minority unoffending and enlightened.”
A lively contest for the office of grand master, to be voted on tomorrow, was brewing here and was to be fought out in the meetings of the nominations committee. Louis B. Siegel, first deputy grand master, and successor by custom to the post being vacated by Isadore Apfel, grand master, is being opposed by S. Silverstein, New York attorney, who held the position five years ago.
