Rabbi Judah Leib Twersky, Chassidic Rabbi of Hornostapol, was subjected to a minute search of his person and baggage at the hands of customs officials when he arrived in New York Wednesday on the steamer Olypic. A delegation of Orthodox rabbis who waited at the pier to greet Rabbi Twersky expressed indignation at the treatment accorded the rabbi who is 65 years old.
Members of the Custom Diamond Squad, learning that Rabbi Twersky came to the United States by way of Antwerp, ordered the Rabbi to be taken back to his cabin to be scarched for smuggled diamonds. The activity of the squad was in connection with the recent discovered diamond smuggling ring.
When nothing of a contraband nature was found, the special agents offered their apologies and permitted Rabbi Twersky to rejoin his friends on the pier.
Orthodox leaders said they will make a formal protest to the Treasury Department in Washington.
