Dr. M.C. Weiler, founder and builder of the Reform movement in South Africa, and temporal head of the movement for the past 19 years, resigned from the position of president for life of the S.A. Union for Progressive Judaism. Mr. I. Greenberg, former chairman of the Johannesburg Reform Congregations, was elected president to succeed him.
Rabbi Weiler said he believed this position should be held in the future by a layman. He indicated that he was not retiring from working on behalf of the movement, but as long as he lived in South Africa he intended to take an active part in the movement. He was unanimously elected honorary president of the Reform movement in South Africa.
