President Eisenhower was urged today to call a “summit conference” of religious leaders of all faiths in the United States to mobilize public opinion against Communism. The suggestion was voiced at the opening session of the three-day conference of the Rabbinical Council of America at the Breakers Hotel here.
Rabbi Solomon Sharfman, president of the organization, which claims a membership of 750 Orthodox rabbis, opened the conference with a call for a mass pilgrimage of American Jews to Israel during the 10th anniversary celebrations there this year. At the same time, he urged Israel to “fully incorporate Talmudic maxims in her legislative codes.”
Rabbi Sharfman concluded his address by announcing to the conference that “the Rabbinical Council of America recognizes the Chief Rabbinate as the sole authority for the adjudication of religious matters in Israel. In return, the Rabbinical Council of America is to receive full recognition from the Chief Rabbinate as the liaison rabbinical unit in the United States.” Over 500 rabbis from the United States and Canada are participating in this three-day parley.
