Deploring the “growing trend” toward state-en-acted “right to work” laws, Rabbi Abraham J. Feldman, president of the Synagogue Council of America, declared today in a Labor Day Statement, that such laws, “like certain aspects of the Taft-Hartley Law,” can nullify some of labor’s gains. The Synagogue Council represents Reform, Conservative and Orthodox rabbis and congregations.
In his statement, Rabbi Feldman hailed labor’s progress, climaxed by the recent merger of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations. But, he stressed, the great social gains made by a strong unified labor movement in cooperation with “forward-looking business leadership” should not “lull us into indifference over the profound dangers which inhere” in legislation typified by state “right to work” laws.
