Challenging the present social system as “responsible for current social collapse and catastrophe,” the Social Justice Commission of the Central Conference of American Rabbis called for the establishment of “a thoroughgoing socialized democracy” in a statement issued yesterday. Dr. Sidney E. Goldstein is chairman of the committee.
The statement, to be read from pulpits of synagogues throughout the land during the coming Holy Days, emphasized that only by the growth of such a society can the American people escape the dictatorship and tyranny of communism and fascism.
Four principles were enunciated in the document as a “social philosophy that is derived from the expanding democratic ideal that must henceforth be sovereign in our social life.” They are:
“Socialization of basic social enterprises; redistribution of the national wealth and income through “a fundamental system of taxation”; support of social security measures for sick, aged and unemployed; maintenance of civil liberties “and the rights of labor uncompromised.”
“This change can be achieved,” said the statement, “the members are convinced, without force and violence and bloodshed and through the orderly methods of democratic procedure.”
