Israel’s Ambassador to the United States, Yitzhak Rabin, said today the door is still open to an interim settlement with Egypt on reopening the Suez Canal, along the lines proposed by Israel. He said efforts to reach an interim settlement would continue. Rabin left for Washington today after a brief home leave and consultations with government leaders. The envoy who has been sharply critical of American policy in the Middle East and especially the Nixon Administration’s delay in responding to Israel’s request for more Phantom jet aircraft, said the U.S. repeats that its policy is to maintain the balance of power in the Mideast. It is Israel’s task to see to it that this policy is carried out in practice and does not remain on paper only, Rabin said.
