Israel’s Ambassador to Washington, Yitzhak Rabin, is due here this week on what was described officially as a private visit not connected with his diplomatic duties. Some sources said, however, that he was returning for urgent consultations necessitated by the deepening rift between Israel and the US. He returns at a time when a major confrontation seems to be shaping up over the apparent American decision not to resume deliveries of Phantom jets to Israel at this time. Other sources said today that it was not accurate to picture relations with the US in such dramatic terms.
