Messages expressing “moral concern for interracial justice” and asserting that a “new spirit of reconciliation is abroad in the land” were made public here today in connection with the 30th annual observance of “Race Relations Sunday” by the executive committee of the Commission on Religious Organizations of the National Conference of Christians and Jews and by the National Council of Churches of Christ in America.
The National Conference’s statement declared that “in spite of the evident progress that has been made in race relations in the United States, the recent instances of racial violence make it clear that the virus of prejudice and discrimination still infects our American community.” The very peace of the world is at stake in this issue” since millions of men far removed from our shores watch to see how well our actions match our democratic words,” it continued.
The National Council asserted that “a revolution in race relations has been taking place in America in the last decade,” adding that “the issue of race has become crucial in a time when men must learn to live as brothers if they are to live at all.”
