Racist and anti-Semitic attacks by German far-right extremists rose by more than a quarter in 1997 over the previous year, according to government statistics. In its annual report on militant groups, Germany’s internal security service said there were 790 such attacks last year, a 27 percent increase over 1996. Recent German newspaper reports had estimated an even higher number of attacks last year.
