The amount of $40,000 was subscribed toward the $100,000 campaign to enlarge the facilities of the Jacob H. Schiff Center, the Bronx, at a dinner Saturday night in commemoration of the birth of the late Jacob H. Schiff, at which the campaign was inaugurated.
Judge Irving Lehman of the Court of Appeals, president of the Jewish Welfare Board, was the principal speaker, Commissioner Albert Goldman acted as toastmaster and the other speakers included Judge Albert Cohn and Dr. Alexander Basel, Rabbi of the Center.
Among the contributions were two anonymous gifts of $5,000 each and $5,000 from the Sisterhood of the Center. Other contributors included Samuel Berger, president of the Center, M. Tischler, Simon Blum and Max Kraus.
The campaign of the Center was undertaken following a survey made by the Jewish Welfare Board. Dr. Philip R. Goldstein of the Jewish Welfare Board is conducting the campaign which will continue until January 17.
