Zionists and non-Zionists joined in honoring Dr. Chaim Weizmann at the dinner opening the Detroit United Palestine Appeal for $110,000. Forty-five thousand dollars towards the quota was subscribed at the dinner.
Dr. Leo M. Franklin, non-Zionist, urged a united front for Palestine on the part of all Jews.
Rabbi A. M. Hershman, who introduced Dr. Weizmann, welcomed the criticism against Great Britain in response to which Dr. Weizmann made a statement declaring that the World Zionist Organization never stifled criticism. He admitted that Great Britain has not done as much as could be, but said the British Govenment is slow moving and that the accomplishment was, nevertheless, great. “There may be someone who has a better method of building, but we dare not risk what has already been achieved for what might or might not be achieved.
“A quarred with Great Britain will last five minutes and you won’t have to quarrel again.” Dr. Weizmann declared.
Fred M. Butzel, honorary chairman of the campaign, was toastmaster. Joseph H. Ehrlich, chairman of the drive and Rabbi Aaron Ashinsky also addressed the gathering.
