The historic Rashi Arch, at Worms, erected to the memory of the great Jewish scholar and commentator on the Bible, and which has been standing for hundreds of years, has been renamed the Klaus Selzner Arch by the Nazis. According to the Wormser Volkszeitung, Selzner was “a prominent fighter against the Jewish spirit.”
The Rashi, Rabbi Solomon Bar Isaac, was born in Troyes, France, in 1040 and died there in 1105. A legend even in his own day, innumerable stories, both fact and fiction, have grown up around the Rashi. It it known, however, that the family of the Rashi lived in Worms for some time and that the Rashi studied in the schools of the Worms Jewish community for some time.
