A re-trial of 40 Jews on charges of participation in illegal Jewish emigration from Morocco, scheduled to get underway today in Tangiers, is provoking grave concern among Jewish leaders in Mediterranean countries.
Zachariah Shuster, European director of the American Jewish Committee, said here today that the 40 defendants were tried for the first time two months ago, and were given sentences of up to one year in Jail. The re-trials were ordered when the public prosecutor in Tangiers moved for more drastic penalties.
The Moroccan Government, which had allowed emigration for the 200,000 Jews in Morocco, clamped down a ban in July 1, 1957, ending emigration almost completely.
