President Reagan has invited prominent Jewish Republicans who supported his election campaign to meet with him tomorrow afternoon at the White House to discuss the nation’s economic and foreign affairs, the Republican National Committee (RNC) has made known.
Among those invited are Theodore Cummings of Los Angeles and Max Fisher of Detroit, honorary co-chairmen of the Coalition for Reagan-Bush, Gordon Zacks, of Columbus, Ohio, a principal in Vice President George Bush’s Presidential nomination effort; and Hershey Gold of Los Angeles, who headed Democrats for Reagan in the campaign.
Almost all of the invited were affiliated with the Coalition, according to the RNC. It said invitations were issued for the President’s first significant meeting with his leading Jewish supporters to seek their support in acquainting Jewish communities with his programs.
Two weeks ago, Secretary of State Alexander Haig met at the State Department with Fisher, who is chairman of the Jewish Agency’s Board of Governors; Howard Squadron, chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations; and Yehuda Hellman, the Conference’s executive vice chairman. Haig invited them.
When the RNC was asked why Squadron or other Jewish communal leaders were not invited to the Reagan meeting, a spokesperson said the list of invitees was not completed but in any case individuals were being invited and not as organizational representatives, although those being asked to attend have important organizational ties.
