Recent dispatches from Vienna have served to recall in the minds of many Jews here the interest of Dr. Hainisch, President of Austria, in the relief work carried on among the middle classes in 1921-2.
Mr. James N. Rosenberg, formerly European director of the Joint Distribution Committee has a letter which he received from Dr. Hainisch a year ago thanking him for his share in having started the movement for the relief of the middle classes.
Dr. Hainisch who has been severely criticized for his friendly attitude towards the Jews should find many supporters in Vienna, according to Dr. Rosenberg, who recalled the fact that about $450,000 was distributed among the needy and starving Austrians. “Is it too much to hope that the men and women whom we were glad to aid in that critical and tragic hour will not forget that American Jews rose above the limitations of race and religion and extended their aid for the common brotherhood of man?” asks Mr. Rosenberg.
